THE PUBLIC SHELF
Open when you're about to give up
You've wanted to quit four times this year. I know because you told me each time, and each time I wrote the date down on the back of a receipt in my wallet. I've been keeping score for you.
March 3: the internship rejection. You said you were done applying. Two weeks later you got the call.
May 19: the night you sat in your car outside the gym because you couldn't make yourself walk in. You walked in the next morning instead.
August 8: the fight with your manager. You almost sent the email. You slept on it, and he apologized on Monday.
October 30: you didn't tell me what that one was. You just said, I can't do this anymore, and then you did.
That's four for four. You have a perfect record of getting through the thing you were sure would break you.
If you're opening this, we're probably on number five. I'm not going to tell you it doesn't hurt. I'm going to tell you that I've watched you, and the version of you on the other side of the bad week is always better than the version who wanted to quit.
Give it seven days. Then call me and I'll get out the receipt.
Jess
