THE PUBLIC SHELF
Open when you're having a bad day
First, the good news: this day is going to end. It has to. That's how days work.
You don't have to fix it. You don't have to figure out why it went wrong or what you should have done differently. Bad days aren't problems to solve. They're weather. You just have to get to the other side of this one.
So here are the rules for today, and you're not allowed to argue.
One glass of water, right now. I'll wait.
One real meal, not just crackers standing over the sink.
One walk, even if it's just to the mailbox and back.
And bed early, without scrolling.
Everything else can wait until tomorrow. Every email, every dish, every thing you think you're behind on. None of it is on fire. I promise.
I want you to remember something. Last spring, on that awful week when your car died and you lost the account, you called me from the parking lot of the tire place and said, I'm the worst at being a person. Then you laughed. I don't even remember why. But I remember thinking, someone who can laugh in a tire place parking lot is going to be fine.
You were fine. You will be again.
