Open when you're alone: letters for lonely and sad days

Open when you're alone is a letter for the hours someone sits by themselves with a heavy feeling. You write it ahead, and they open it then. Here is how to write for sad, alone and lonely days, with examples from a partner, a friend, a sibling, a parent and a kid at college.

Each one opens a blank letter with the moment already on the envelope. No account needed.

An example to start from

To Naomi, for a night you are home alone

Naomi, I know the apartment is quiet when I work nights. I picture you on the couch with the lamp on and the TV muted, not watching it.

So here I am, in an envelope. I am not going to tell you to cheer up. I am just keeping you company.

There is soup in the freezer. The label says Tuesday, ignore the label. The blanket is on the chair.

I come through the door at 7:40. I will be tired and happy to see you. Hold that thought until then.

Sad, alone and lonely are three different moments

They sound alike and they are not. Sad usually has a cause: a bad day, bad news, something that went wrong. Alone is about the room: an empty apartment, a holiday by yourself, a night shift. Lonely is the feeling of not being seen, and it can happen in a crowd.

Each one wants a different letter. If you are not sure which one your person is in, write for the quietest version and keep it short.

Letters to borrow from

We wrote these to show what a letter like this can sound like. Borrow a line, then make it yours: the small, true details are what make it land.

To Noor, for when everyone has plans but you

Noor, I know it is Saturday and your phone is quiet and it feels like everyone got a memo.

They did not. People are just busy and bad at texting. You are not the one left out of the group chat, you are the one who reads it too carefully.

I am three hours away at my cousin's wedding, eating a very dry chicken. Think of me suffering. It helps.

Call me tomorrow. Tell me everything you did tonight, even if it was nothing. Especially if it was nothing.

To Andre, from the sister who knows

Andre, I remember being nineteen and eating lunch in the library stairwell so nobody would see I was by myself. I never told anyone.

You do not have to tell me what is going on. I just want you to know this is not a flaw in you. A new place takes a while to start feeling like yours.

Join one thing, even a bad one. A club that meets once a month, a pickup game. It only has to be a place that expects you.

I am a phone call away, and I will pick up even in the stairwell.

To Darius, for the first lonely weekend

Darius, Saturday is the hard one, I remember. The week has a shape, and then the weekend does not.

You might be sitting in your room wondering why everyone else seems to have found a group. Most of them are wondering the same, and most of them are better at pretending.

Go for a walk. Take a book to the cafe and let someone ask what you are reading.

I am at home with the radio on. Text me a photo of whatever you find. I do not need a reason.

To Mom, for a quiet Sunday afternoon

Mom, I know Sunday afternoons are quiet at your place now that I am gone. I used to be the noise.

So I am sending some. I am about to tell you about my roommate, who owns four kettles and has never made tea.

You raised me to be good company for myself, so I am okay up here. I wanted you to hear the same from me: you are good company too.

Call a friend. Put on the music we sang to in the car. I will ring at six.

To Dalia, a short one for a flat day

Dalia, today is a flat one and you do not have to explain it. Go outside for ten minutes, even if it is raining. Come back and drink something hot. I wrote this because I am glad you exist, and I wanted that in writing.

What to write in an open when you're alone letter

Be company, not a fix.

  • Do not tell them to cheer up. Say that you see how heavy it is.
  • Say what you are doing and where you are, so they feel you nearby.
  • Tell them the feeling is not a flaw in them. Do not promise it will be gone by Friday.
  • Give them one small thing to do: a walk, something warm to drink, a call.
  • Remind them of one real moment they mattered to you.

Writing one for yourself

If the lonely person is you, a letter to future you can wait for the day you need it. A Yourself letter is locked until the date you pick, and if you leave an email we tell you when it unlocks. Write to the version of you who will be sitting where you are now, and say what helped last time. Start with a letter to yourself.

What a letter can and cannot do

A letter is small. It can make a bad hour feel less empty, and that is reason enough to write one. It does not replace a person. If someone you love has been low for a long stretch, a call or a visit will do more than any envelope. Write the letter, and then reach out too.

IF YOU ARE STUCK

Questions that help you start

  • When did they last seem lonely, and what did you notice?
  • What do they do when the feeling is heavy, and what helps?
  • What is the kindest thing anyone said to you on a lonely day?
  • What can you say that is true without asking them to feel better?
  • What small thing could they do in ten minutes that might help?
  • What moment with them do you keep coming back to?
  • What do you want them to know they are not?
  • What would you say if you were sitting next to them?

Open When never writes your letter for you. These are only here to get the first line down.

QUESTIONS

Questions people ask

What do you write in an open when you're alone letter?
Keep the reader company. Say you know the hour is heavy, say where you are and that you are thinking of them, and give one small thing to do. Do not tell them to cheer up or promise it will pass by tomorrow. One true memory of them is worth more than ten bright slogans.
What is the difference between open when you are sad and open when you feel lonely?
Sad usually follows something: bad news, a bad day, a loss. Lonely is about feeling unseen or unreachable, and it can happen with people in the room. Alone is the plain fact of being by yourself. Write a different letter for each, or keep one short and kind enough to fit all three.
Can an open when you feel lonely letter really help?
It can help a little. A letter shows that someone thought of you before the bad hour arrived, which is hard to feel in an empty room. It is company, not a cure, and it does not replace a call, a visit or a person who can sit with you.
Who can I write an open when you're alone letter for?
Anyone: a partner on a night shift, a best friend in a new city, a sibling, a parent whose house went quiet, or a kid in their first month at college. Think of the person and the hour you worry about, and write for exactly that moment instead of for sadness in general.
Does the other person need an account to open the letter?
No. Nobody needs an account to write or read a letter on Open When. They get an email saying a sealed letter is waiting, or a private link or QR code you gave them. They open it when the moment comes, and they can send one tap back, such as Thank you.
