Open when letters already written, ready to read and adapt

These open when letters already written are starting points, not scripts. Each is a complete letter for a real kind of moment, with small details you can swap for your own. Read a few, keep what fits, and write yours in your own voice.

Open when you miss home

Hi Mei,

I know the dorm still smells like someone else's laundry and the food tastes like it's missing something. Being homesick isn't a mistake. It means you came from somewhere good.

Do one thing for me. Call your mom, then eat something from home, even if it's just instant noodles from the store by the station.

We saved you the window table at lunch. It's empty and looks very dramatic. Come back for winter break and we'll fix the whole thing.

How to use open when sample letters

Open when sample letters work best as a shape. Each one names the moment, says something true about the person, and ends with a small thing to do. Keep that order and replace every detail.

Change the names, places and memories first. A letter about "the diner on Fifth" only works if you have a diner, so write the real detail instead.

Open When does not write letters for you, and neither do these. They show what a finished letter can sound like. The words you send should be yours.

We wrote these to show what a letter like this can sound like. Borrow a line, then make it yours: the small, true details are what make it land.

Open when you're stressed about exams

Hi love,

I know it feels like everything depends on this week. It doesn't. I've watched your grades go up and down for years, and the girl who studied at the kitchen table for hours doesn't disappear if one paper goes badly.

Here's the plan. Study for one more hour, then stop. Eat a real dinner. Sleep before midnight. The tired version of you gets less done than the rested one.

There's banana bread in the freezer. It's for you, not your brother.

Open when you get your heart broken

I'm not going to say he wasn't good enough or that you'll find someone better. Right now that sounds like nonsense and you know it.

What I will say is that I'm available. Call at 3 a.m. Show up at my door in your pajamas. Send me one sad emoji and I'll know. I have a freezer full of the cookie dough you like.

You don't have to be okay by Friday. Take as long as it takes. I'll be here for all of it.

Open when we're far apart

It's 6 a.m. here and 5 p.m. yesterday where you are, which still feels like a magic trick.

I've been looking for things that are the same on both sides. The moon, mostly. I know that's cheesy, but I stood on the balcony last night and thought, you're under this too.

Twenty-three days until I land. I've already picked the first restaurant. You'll hate how excited I am about it.

Open when it's your birthday

Happy birthday, old man. (You're three months older than me and I will never let it go.)

Last year you said you didn't want a fuss, and then you looked so quietly happy when the kids sang. So I'm making a small one: pancakes in bed, no phones, and the long drive out to the lake.

Thank you for another year of coffee in the morning and bad puns. I'm still not tired of either.

Open when you move out

Your room stays your room. I'm putting that in writing so you can't say I didn't.

I already know you'll call about the dishwasher and what temperature chicken is supposed to reach. Call. I'll pick up on the second ring even if I'm in the garage.

Take the toolbox. The red screwdriver is the one that never slips. Take the good blanket too. Your mom won't say it, but she wants you to have it.

I'm proud of you, kid. Go make it a home.

Open when you need a laugh

Remember when Dad tried to parallel park at your graduation and ended up in the neighbors' hydrangeas? I still think about his face. He got out of the car and said, "That bush came out of nowhere."

Think about that for a minute. The bush came out of nowhere.

I don't know what's going on with you today, but I bet it's smaller than a hydrangea incident. Go put on the ridiculous socks I got you.

Open when you receive this letter

Hello you,

This is the letter I said I'd write. I sealed it on a Sunday afternoon with a cold cup of tea beside me, and now it's whenever you're reading it. Strange and good.

I don't have a big message. You were on my mind, and I'm glad we stayed friends through three moves and one very bad haircut (mine). More letters are coming, each for a different moment. This one is just hello.

Write back if you want. Or just call.

Open when you feel alone

New city, new apartment, nobody to text about the weird noodle place on the corner. I know the feeling. I had it for most of my first year in Denver.

Here are the people who would pick up if you called right now: me. Your sister. Aunt Lena, who will talk for forty minutes about her tomatoes and make you feel better anyway.

Being alone and being lonely aren't the same thing. Go for a walk. Say good morning to the barista. I'll call on Sunday.

Open when you did something big

You sat the exam. I'm writing this before the results, because I don't think the results change what you did.

I watched you give up weekends for eight months. I saw you eat dinner standing at the counter, reading flashcards. When someone says luck, I want to tell them about the counter.

Take the night off. Let someone buy you a very large pizza. I'm proud to know you.

What these open when letter examples have in common

They are short, usually under 150 words. They name one specific memory instead of praising in general. They sound like the person writing, with the jokes and rough edges that come with that. And none of them tries to fix the reader. They keep the reader company at one particular moment.

  • Start with the moment, in a sentence.
  • Use a detail only you would know.
  • Say one thing you believe about them.
  • End with a small next step they can actually do.

Letters built this way are easier to write than a big speech, and easier to read when someone is tired or upset.

Open when you receive this letter, and other first letters

One of the examples above is an "open when you receive this letter" letter. It has no moment except the arrival. It says hello, explains the idea and tells the reader more is coming, which makes it a good letter to put on top of a set.

For more moments to write about, see the open when ideas. If the format is new to you, what an open when letter is explains it from the start.

IF YOU ARE STUCK

Questions that help you start

  • Which of these moments does the person you are writing to actually have?
  • What is the one detail in your version that no one else could write?
  • What do you want them to do right after reading?
  • What would you say if you only had 100 words?
  • What are you glad they know about you already, so you don't have to explain it?
  • Where will they be when they open it?
  • What is a small, true thing about them you have never said out loud?

Open When never writes your letter for you. These are only here to get the first line down.

QUESTIONS

Questions people ask

Where can I find open when letters already written?
Here. The ten letters above cover a partner, friend, child, parent and sibling, and the ideas page lists more moments with notes on what to write. They are examples to learn from. A letter copied word for word tends to read like a template, so change the names and memories until it sounds like you.
How long should an open when letter be?
Most of the examples above run under 150 words, and that is enough. Short letters are easier to read when someone is tired or upset. A longer letter makes sense for a milestone like a wedding or an 18th birthday. Cover one moment well rather than everything at once.
What do I put in an "open when you receive this letter" letter?
Say hello, say why you wrote, and tell them what is coming. It is a short opener: the first letter in a set, or a note on its own. Mention one real thing about where you were when you wrote it, like the weather or what you were drinking. That small detail makes the arrival feel like a person, not a template.
Can I use these open when letter examples for a boyfriend or girlfriend?
Yes. Letters like "miss me" and "can't sleep" suit partners, and the details translate easily. Swap in your own memories and nicknames. The boyfriend and girlfriend pages have a longer list of partner moments and more examples written for them.
Can I write an open when letter online instead of on paper?
Yes. On Open When you write the letter, choose the moment, pick a wax seal color and a handwriting style, and send it by email, a private link or a QR code. It is free to write and read, and you do not need an account.
