A letter to my daughter: examples from a mom or a dad

A letter to my daughter does not have to be long or perfect. It has to sound like you. Here are touching examples from a mom, a dad and both, short messages to my daughter, and how to seal a letter for the day she turns 18 or the morning of her birthday.

An example to start from

To Maya, on your seventh birthday

Maya, you are seven today, and this morning you told me you are basically eight. You are not. Enjoy seven.

This year you rode your bike without the wobble, lost two teeth and decided cilantro is a personal enemy. I would not change a thing, except maybe the cilantro.

When you read this one day, I hope you still ask a hundred questions before breakfast. Keep the questions. The answers can take their time.

Happy birthday, kiddo. Cake is at four.

How to write a letter to your daughter

Start with something you saw her do this week, not a speech about life. A small scene is easier to write and harder to forget: the way she reads with one foot on the wall, the sound of her key in the door.

  • Say what you see in her right now, at her actual age.
  • Add one thing you hope for her. Skip the list of rules.
  • Say sorry if you owe it. A short one is stronger than a long one.
  • End with something you can keep promising, like the porch light is on.

Write the way you talk. Open When never writes the letter for you. The prompts below only help you start, and the words stay yours.

EXAMPLE LETTERS

Letters to borrow from

We wrote these to show what a letter like this can sound like. Borrow a line, then make it yours: the small, true details are what make it land.

To Zainab, on becoming a teenager

Zainab, you are thirteen, and I have been told I am embarrassing. This is probably accurate.

I am not writing to give advice. I am writing because you are growing into someone I have not met yet, and I am excited to. You can close your door. I will knock, you can say go away, and I will still be in the hall.

Some days you will not want to talk. That is allowed. I will make the grilled cheese anyway.

I loved who you were. I love who you are today. I am looking forward to tomorrow's you.

To Camille, to open on your 18th birthday

Camille, you are eighteen today, which means we are the ones who got old.

We wrote this when you were nine and asked why the moon followed our car. We did not know the answer then either. We only knew we would love whoever you turned into, and you have turned into someone we would pick as a friend.

Vote. Call your grandmother. Do not sign anything you have not read twice. Come home often enough that the dog remembers you.

We are so proud of you. We were proud when you were nine.

To Imani, on the day you graduate

Imani, I will not be able to say this at the ceremony, because I will be crying into a program, so I am saying it here.

I watched you do the night classes, the double shifts and the thesis you rewrote three times. You never told me when it got hard. I found out later, and I was prouder of that than of the diploma.

Take the job that scares you a little. If it does not work out, there is a spare room and a dad who can make eggs.

I am so proud I can hardly stand it.

To Hannah, the night before you move out

Hannah, the boxes are by the door and the kitchen is a mess of tape, and I am pretending this is normal.

I have one request. Do not fix everything by yourself. Ask. Call. Ask again.

You will burn the pasta. You will forget to pay something. You will have a day where you sit on the floor of a very small apartment and wonder what you did. All of that is normal, and none of it is failing.

Your room stays your room. I said I might turn it into an office. I was lying, to scare you.

To Keiko, for a week when everything feels heavy

Keiko, you do not have to explain it. I know it is a lot right now, and I know you are tired in the way sleep does not fix.

I am not going to tell you it will all work out. I do not know that. What I know is that you have survived every hard day so far, and I have been watching.

Be easy on yourself this week. Eat the good bread. Cancel the thing you can cancel.

Call me at any hour, even if all you say is hi. I will pick up and say hi back.

To Lucia, on your wedding day

Lucia, I held your hand crossing the street until you were nine, and then you let go. Today I will hold your arm for one more walk, and then I will let go again.

I am not losing a daughter. I am gaining a very loud extra table at Thanksgiving.

Do the dishes when it is not your turn. Laugh at the same bad jokes for forty years. That is most of it.

Go on. They are waiting, and I have a speech I will not get through.

To Anika, for no reason at all

Anika, nothing happened today. I walked past your school bag by the door and thought I should tell you something.

You are the best part of my ordinary days. The way you hum when you do homework. The way you argue with the weather. The way you say Dad as if it were a full sentence.

That is all. You do not have to reply. Maybe put this in the drawer with the others.

To Elena, to open when you have a baby of your own

Elena, if you are reading this, you are probably tired in a way nobody can describe beforehand.

Here is what I know. You do not have to love every minute. You will love some minutes so much it frightens you, and that will be enough.

Do not do it alone. Call me. I will come, wash the bottles and say nothing about how you do things.

You were the best thing I ever did, and I got plenty wrong. You will too. The baby will not mind.

  6. I still remember how you felt asleep on my shoulder. You are taller now, but some part of me is still holding on.
  7. You do not have to be brave today. You only have to be here. I will do the worrying.
  8. You can change your mind, your major or your hair. You cannot change how loved you are.
  9. To my daughter: may you have good friends, work you like and a pair of shoes that does not hurt.
  10. I know you rolled your eyes at this. I am sending it anyway.
  11. Your laugh is my favorite sound in the house. Please come home and make it.

  15. I am sorry for the mornings I was short with you. You deserved a calmer me.
  16. Go slowly. Growing up has no deadline, whatever your phone says.
  17. You were born stubborn, and I am so glad. It is going to take you far.
  18. If today was hard, you do not have to explain it. Just come sit with me.
  19. You fell off the bike, got up and told me to let go. You were right then. I am still learning it.
  20. On turning 18: the world is bigger than our town. Go see it, and call when you land.
  21. I love you on the days you text back and on the days you do not.
  22. You are my favorite person to be around. Do not tell your brother.
  23. My dear Sophie, it has been the privilege of my life to watch you grow up. I look forward to everything still ahead of you.
  24. Call me when you have a minute. No news needed. I just like the sound of you.

Touching letter to daughter from mom, and from dad

A touching letter to a daughter from a mom can start with a memory: the hospital, the first day of school, the kitchen at night. A letter from a dad can start with a plain fact, like I noticed you laughing in the car, and let the feeling follow. Neither has to match the other.

If it is hard to start, borrow an opener:

  • I was thinking about the day you
  • Nobody else would notice this, but
  • I wish I had told you sooner that
  • You are going to roll your eyes, and I am saying it anyway
  • When you read this, you will be

Letters to my daughter for every age

  • Little. Write what she does now: her words, her fears, her favorite shirt. She will read it later and see herself.
  • Ten to twelve. Keep it funny and specific. Short is better.
  • Teenage years. Do not use a letter to win an argument. Say you are on her side, and keep it brief.
  • Eighteen and out the door. Be honest that you are proud and a little scared. Let her go in the last line.
  • Grown up. Tell her what you see now, and what you did not see when she was small.

A message to my daughter, when a letter is too much

Some days a page is too much and one line is exactly right. The messages below are short enough for a text, a card, a sticky note on the mirror or a lunchbox. Change a word or two so they sound like you. A message that sounds like you beats a perfect one that does not.

Seal a letter for the day she is ready

A letter to your daughter does not have to be read today. On Open When you can seal it for a moment, such as Open when you turn 18 or Open when you have a bad week. It stays locked until the date you choose, and from that day she opens it when she is ready.

For a birthday, wedding or graduation, a letter can be sealed for the day itself: her email arrives that morning, or you print a QR code to tuck into a card or gift. If you do not know which email she will have in ten years, keep the letter for now and give her the private link yourself.

It is free, and nobody needs an account to write or read. You can unseal and edit a letter any time before it is opened, and download your own copy. See also letters to a baby.

IF YOU ARE STUCK

Questions that help you start

  • What does she do that nobody else would notice?
  • What was she like at three, and what has stayed the same?
  • What do you wish someone had told you at her age?
  • What did she do that made you proud when she thought nobody was watching?
  • Which ordinary day with her would you want back?
  • What do you want her to know she never has to earn?
  • What have you been meaning to say out loud?
  • Is there something you need to apologize for?
  • What do you want her to do the first time she feels homesick?
  • What do you hope she remembers about the kitchen, the car or her room?

Open When never writes your letter for you. These are only here to get the first line down.

QUESTIONS

Questions people ask

What should I write in a letter to my daughter?
Write what you actually notice about her: a habit, a laugh, something she did that made you proud when she was not looking. Add one wish for her and one thing you want her to always know, such as that your door is open. Skip lists of advice. A letter that sounds like you at the kitchen table beats a polished one.
How long should a letter to my daughter be?
As long as one good memory and one wish take. For a young girl that may be five lines. For a graduation or a wedding it can run to a page. A short letter she rereads beats a long one she skims, and you can always write a second letter for another moment.
Can a dad write a letter to his daughter?
Yes. A dad does not need big words. A few plain lines about something he noticed, what he is proud of and that he is on her side will land. Start with a small fact, like the way she hums doing homework, and let the feeling show up after.
When is the best time to give my daughter a letter?
Any time she is open to it: a birthday, the night before a big change, after a bad day. You can also seal one for a moment far ahead, like turning 18, to be read when it arrives. In a rough patch, a short note slipped under her door can say more than a talk.
Can I write a letter to my daughter now and have her open it years from now?
Yes. On Open When you seal it for a moment, such as turning 18, and choose the date it unlocks, such as her 18th birthday. For a date many years away, also download your own copy and keep it with your important papers, so the letter does not depend on any one website. You can unseal and edit it until it is opened.
