How to write a happy birthday letter, with examples

A happy birthday letter says what a card cannot: the one specific thing you noticed about them this year. Here are short birthday messages, full letters for friends and family, and a way to seal one for a birthday that has not happened yet.

To Jess, on turning 32

Jess,

Happy birthday. I am writing this on paper, which you will find alarming, so please sit down.

I have been thinking about the first week we met. You were eating a sandwich on the stairs at work and told me the building had a ghost. There was no ghost. You just wanted someone to sit with. I am so glad it was me.

This year you moved cities and got a dog who hates you, and you still answered my calls at midnight. You are the person I would trust with my keys and my secrets, in either order.

I hope this year is gentle. I hope there is cake. Please do not share it with the dog.

How to write a happy birthday letter

A happy birthday letter can be half a page. It does not need a theme or a poem. It needs to sound like you.

  • Open with the person, not the year. "Dear Jess" beats "Happy birthday to someone special."
  • Tell one memory from the past year, short and specific.
  • Say what you admire in them now, not what you admired when you were nine.
  • Mention one thing you want to do together before the next birthday.
  • Sign off plainly, with the name they know you by.

A card gives you a line. A letter gives you room to say the part you would normally skip.

To Dev, who is now officially old

Dev,

Congratulations on thirty-five. I looked it up and it is a normal age to be.

Here is what I want you to know. You are still the guy who drove four hours to help me move a couch and then complained about the couch the whole way. I would do the same for you in a heartbeat, but I would complain louder.

This year you discovered the word "ergonomic" and a deep love of early dinners. None of it matters. You are my friend.

Go and eat something with a candle in it.

To Mom, from far away

Dear Mom,

Happy birthday. I am sorry I am not there. The phone will have to do, but I wanted to write you something you can hold.

When I was little I thought you knew everything. Now I know you just never let us see you worry. I found out about the double shifts years later, from Aunt Ngozi, and I have not stopped thinking about it.

Thank you for the shoes and the lunches and the rides. Thank you for saying nothing when I was awful at sixteen.

I am making your jollof recipe on Sunday. It will be worse than yours. I will send a photo anyway.

To Dad, on his 60th

Dad,

Happy sixtieth. You said you did not want a fuss, so this is not a fuss. It is a letter.

I have been trying to think what you taught me, and it is mostly small. How to hold a ladder. How to wait out an argument in the car. How to say "I was wrong" and mean it. I use all three nearly every week.

I know you do not say much about how you feel. That is fine. I know anyway. I know from the way you still check my tires when I visit.

I am proud to be your son. Let's go fishing in April.

Open when you turn 18

Sam,

If you are reading this, you are eighteen, and I am somewhere in the next room pretending not to listen.

I have thought a long time about what to say. Here is the plain version. I do not need you to be impressive. I need you to be kind to yourself, to call when you are in trouble, and to remember that you can come home. That never expires.

I am proud of who you are. Not who you will be, who you are today, in that hoodie, eating cereal at noon.

Happy birthday. You are an adult now. You are also still my kid. Both are true.

Open when you turn 40

Hana,

You turn forty today, and I wrote this when we were thirty-four, standing in the kitchen at that terrible party, wondering whether we would still be friends. I think we are. I hope we are.

I do not know what your life looks like now. I hope there is someone who makes you laugh in the morning. I hope you still say "in a minute" and never mean it.

Whatever has happened since, I want you to know that when I wrote this, you were the person I most wanted to grow old arguing with.

Happy birthday. Please call me, even if it has been a while.

To Theo, on his birthday

Theo,

Happy birthday. I bought you a gift and then wrote this because I was afraid the gift was not enough.

Here is what I know about you after this year. You hum when you cook. You hold the door for strangers who are twenty feet away. You make everyone in the room feel like the funny one, which is a lot to ask from a man who tells such bad puns.

I am grateful for you. I am looking forward to the next one, and the one after.

Come find me when you are done reading. I will be the one hiding the candles.

A birthday letter to a friend

A happy birthday letter to a friend is allowed to be silly in the middle and sincere at the end. Tell them the moment you knew you would be friends, something they said that stuck with you, and one thing you are glad about now.

A friend birthday letter works best when it is a little funny and a little true. If the friendship has been through a hard stretch, you can say that gently. Do not use the letter to settle anything, and do not make it a roast that ends without a kind word.

Milestone birthday letters: 18, 30, 40, 50

A number gives a letter its shape. For an 18th, write about who they have become and what you hope they remember about home. For a 30th or 40th, write about what you have watched them build. For a 50th and beyond, write about the years you were there for and the ones you hope to be.

Skip the age jokes unless the person tells them first. Anyone can joke about a number. Only you can say what the person did in the years behind it.

Seal one for the next birthday

A birthday letter on Open When is sealed for the day itself. The reader's email arrives that morning, or you print a QR code to tuck into a card or gift. It stays sealed until the day, so you can write it when you are thinking of them and let it wait.

For a milestone, you can also write an Open When letter, such as "Open when you turn 40." It stays locked until the birthday you set, so it cannot be opened early.

Or write to yourself. A letter to future you is locked until the date you pick, such as your next birthday, and if you leave an email we tell you when it unlocks. Nobody needs an account to write or read any of these, and you can edit a letter until it is opened.

Questions that help you start

  • What is your first memory of them?
  • What did they do this year that made you proud, or worried?
  • What do they do that makes you laugh every time?
  • What have you never thanked them for?
  • What would you like them to remember about this age?
  • What do you want to do with them before their next birthday?
  • What did they teach you without meaning to?
  • If they were reading this at twice their age, what would you want them to know?

Open When never writes your letter for you. These are only here to get the first line down.

QUESTIONS

Questions people ask

What do you write in a happy birthday letter?
Start with their name, say happy birthday, and tell them one specific thing you noticed this year. Add what you admire about them now and one thing you hope for in the year ahead. Sign off plainly. Half a page is plenty, and a letter that sounds like you beats a polished one every time.
How do I write a birthday letter to a friend?
Keep it friendly and a little funny. Tell them the moment you knew you would be friends, something they said that stuck, and one thing you are glad about now. Finish with a plain, sincere line. If you are nervous about getting too soft, put the soft part at the very end, after the joke.
How long should a friend birthday letter be?
Half a page to a full page is enough. One honest paragraph about the friendship, one about this year, and a line about what is ahead. It is better to be short and specific than long and general. If you run out of things to say, stop, and sign your name.
Is a birthday letter better than a birthday card?
They do different jobs. A card is quick and a letter is slower, and both are kind. A letter has room for the memory or the thank-you that will not fit on a card. If you want both, put a short line in the card and write the longer thing as a letter.
Can I write a birthday letter now and have it arrive on the day?
Yes. A birthday letter on Open When is sealed for the day itself. The reader's email arrives that morning, or you print a QR code to put in a card or gift. It is free to write and read, and you can unseal and edit it any time before it is opened.
