Anniversary card messages, and a letter for the next one

Anniversary card messages come out stiff when the card is blank and the dinner reservation is in an hour. Here are lines for a husband, a wife, a couple and a 50th, plus full letters you can borrow. Then seal one for next year.

An example to start from

To Idris, on our seventh

Idris,

Seven years. I counted this morning because you were asleep and I was not.

Here is something I have never said. When you come home and take off your shoes by the door, left then right, every day in the same order, something in me settles. I cannot explain it. It is the sound of you being here.

I am sorry about the grocery list argument. You were right about the oat milk.

I booked the table at the place with the bad parking, because I know you like it.

Happy anniversary.

What to write in an anniversary card message

The best anniversary card messages are small and specific. They sound like the two of you, not like a card.

  • Use one memory from this year, not the wedding day. The wedding day gets plenty of attention already.
  • Say what you appreciate now, in plain words.
  • Keep the inside jokes. A joke only the two of you get is worth more than a poem.
  • Pick a length and stick to it: one line, a paragraph, or a letter.

If the card is already signed, a line in the margin counts too.

We wrote these to show what a letter like this can sound like. Borrow a line, then make it yours: the small, true details are what make it land.

To Rosa, after twelve years

Rosa,

This was a rough year. The job, the move, your mom. I watched you carry all of it and still ask me how my day went.

I want you to know I noticed. I notice a lot more than I say.

This is a short letter because I am bad at long ones. Here is the short version: I would marry you again, in the rain, in the wrong shoes.

I love you. Happy anniversary.

To Dan and Priya, from a friend

Dan and Priya,

Happy tenth. I was at your wedding, and I was also at your worst fight about the couch, and I love you both more for it.

You are the couple I think of when I want to remember that it is possible. You tease each other, and you also check that the other one's coat is zipped. I notice that.

Thank you for always having a spare plate at your table.

Here is to ten more years, and a couch you both agree on.

To Grandma and Grandpa, fifty years

Dear Grandma and Grandpa,

Fifty years is a very long time, and I have only been here for twenty-two of them, so I am sure I missed the best parts.

Here is what I have seen. Grandpa saves the crunchy end of the toast for Grandma, and she pretends not to notice. You argue about directions and arrive anyway. You hold hands in the car when you think we are not looking.

I am learning more from this than I ever did in school.

Thank you for being the place the whole family comes home to. I love you both.

Open when it's our anniversary

Jonah,

If you are reading this, it is our anniversary, and I am hopefully standing in the kitchen burning something.

I wrote this a year ahead, so I do not know how the year went. I hope it was kind to you. Whatever happened, I want you to know this: when I wrote it, I was glad it was you.

If it was a hard year, remember the rain, the first apartment and the sofa that did not fit through the door. We built that.

Happy anniversary. Come find me.

To Tariq, from far away

Tariq,

I am writing this on a Tuesday in a hotel room with a tiny kettle, thinking about our kitchen. It is our anniversary and I am two time zones away. I hate it.

I called, I know. It is not the same. So here are the words on paper, such as they are.

Thank you for not making me feel guilty about the trip. Thank you for the voice message you left last night, which I have played four times.

I will be home on the 14th. I will cook. You pick the movie.

Happy anniversary. Save me the good side of the bed.

A message to your husband or wife on your anniversary

A good message to a husband on your anniversary names something he does that he thinks nobody notices: the car warmed up in winter, the lunch packed without being asked. Say it once and say it plainly. That is also the trick for an anniversary note to a husband who waves off big speeches: keep it short and make it concrete.

For a wife, skip the compliments about looks and write about what she does. How she reads a room. How she remembers your mother's surgery date. How she makes a new town feel like yours.

Happy anniversary messages for a couple you know

When you write to a couple, write to both of them by name, and say something about the two of them together. A moment you saw them as a pair works better than a compliment to either one alone. Keep it light for the early years and warmer as the years add up. If you are a friend, a sentence about what their home feels like is worth more than "congratulations on your special day."

A message for a 50th wedding anniversary

Fifty years does not need a big word. Thank them, name one specific thing you have watched them do together, and say what their marriage gave the family. If you are a grandchild, tell them one thing you learned from watching. Skip jokes about age unless you know they enjoy them. A short note read aloud at the table can mean more than a long toast.

Seal one for the next anniversary

A card is gone by the end of the evening. A letter can be sealed for a day that has not come yet.

There is no separate anniversary option, so write an Open When letter: "Open when it's our anniversary." Set it to unlock on your anniversary, and it cannot be opened a day early. Set that date to the anniversary and it stays locked until the day. You can read how Open When letters work, or write one for a long-distance partner.

You can also write to yourself. A letter to future you is locked until the date you pick, and if you leave an email we tell you when it unlocks. Describe this year while it is still fresh: what you were scared of, what they said in the car. Next year you read how it began.

IF YOU ARE STUCK

Questions that help you start

  • What is one small thing they do that you would miss if it stopped?
  • What was the hardest stretch this year, and how did they show up for it?
  • What do you remember about the day you met that you have never told them?
  • Which joke between you has outlived the reason for it?
  • What do you want to be doing together on your next anniversary?
  • What are you sorry about from this year, and what are you grateful for?
  • What do they do in the morning that you have come to rely on?
  • If you could say one sentence to them and nothing more, what would it be?

Open When never writes your letter for you. These are only here to get the first line down.

QUESTIONS

Questions people ask

What do you write in an anniversary card?
Write one true thing in your own words. A memory from this year, something you appreciate about them now, or an inside joke all work better than a stock line. Add their name at the top and sign it the way you sign anything else. One or two sentences is fine if that is all that fits on the card.
What is a good message to my husband on our anniversary?
Name something he does that he thinks nobody notices, and thank him for it. Keep the tone the way he likes it: funny if you tease each other, quiet if you do not. "Thank you for making the ordinary days feel like something worth keeping" is the kind of line that works. Say it once and sign it with love.
What do you say on a 50th wedding anniversary?
Keep it plain. Thank them, name something specific you have seen them do together, and say what their marriage means to you or to the family. Skip jokes about age unless they enjoy them. A short, true note read at the table can mean more than a long toast, and it is something they can keep.
How long should an anniversary message be?
As long as it is true. One line suits a card you sign in a hurry. A paragraph suits most cards. A full letter is for years that mattered. If you are unsure, put the short version in the card and write the longer one as a letter you hand over later.
Can I write an anniversary letter now and have it opened next year?
Yes. Write an Open When letter, "Open when it's our anniversary," and set its date to the anniversary, the first day it can be opened. It stays locked until that date. It is free to write and read, no account is needed, and you can edit it until it has been opened.
