Open it when: what open when letters are and how they work

Open it when letters are notes sealed in envelopes, each labeled with a moment: "Open when you miss me," "Open when you can't sleep." The reader keeps them and opens each one when that moment arrives. This page explains the idea, the online version and when to open.

Open when you've had enough of this week

Friday is coming. I know this week took everything you had, and the coffee machine broke too, which feels personal.

Close the laptop. Take your shoes off. Order the good noodles and put it on my tab. You are allowed to be done.

Next week can start on Monday like everyone else's.

What an open when letter is

An open when letter is a letter written for a moment instead of a date. The writer picks the moment: a bad day, a first day, a night when sleep will not come. Then the writer seals the letter, and the reader keeps it until that moment arrives.

The classic version is paper. Someone writes a handful of letters, puts each in its own envelope and labels the front: Open when you miss me. They hand the stack over as a gift, often to a partner who is moving away, a friend starting college or a child leaving home.

The label is the whole trick. A birthday card arrives when the calendar says so. An open when letter arrives when the person needs it, and the reader decides when that is.

Letters to borrow from

We wrote these to show what a letter like this can sound like. Borrow a line, then make it yours: the small, true details are what make it land.

Open when you get the keys

You have the keys. Stand in the empty living room and turn in a circle. Be loud. Nobody can hear you yet.

I was twenty-six when I got mine, and I sat on the floor with a sandwich for an hour. Best lunch I ever had.

Welcome to your own place. I'm bringing a plant that is very hard to kill.

Open when the baby won't stop crying

You are not doing it wrong. Babies cry, and some nights there is no reason you can find.

Hand the baby to someone if you can, and take five minutes with the door closed. A cup of tea, a glass of cold water, whatever you can manage. It passes. It really does pass.

I'm one text away, and I'm awake.

Open when you finish your last exam

Put the pen down. You're done. Whatever the paper said, it's over, and no amount of replaying question six will change it.

Go outside. Eat something that isn't a granola bar. Sleep until noon and then do nothing on purpose.

You worked harder this term than you think you did. I watched.

Open when you've forgotten how far you've come

Right now, as I write this, you're in your second week at the new job and the apartment is still half boxes. You told me you were scared you'd made a mistake.

I don't know what day you're opening this. If it's a hard one, remember the boxes. You walked into all of that and kept going.

I'm writing so you can see how far it goes from here.

Open me when, open this when and open it when

The same idea goes by a few names: open it when, open me when letters, open this when letters, or just open when. The wording on the envelope changes from person to person, but the idea does not. A moment on the outside, a letter on the inside, and a reader who chooses when to open it.

Most people use "open when" for the whole set, and each envelope gets its own line, such as "Open when you graduate" or "Open when you can't stop worrying." For a long list of moments to borrow, see the open when ideas.

How open when letters work online

On Open When you write the letter, choose the moment and seal it. Writing and reading are free, and nobody needs an account. You can leave an email if you like, but it is optional.

You pick a wax seal color and a handwriting style, and you can add one song as a link the reader opens with the words. Then you choose how it travels. The reader can get an email saying a sealed letter is waiting. The email never contains the words. Or you can give them a private link or QR code yourself, or keep the letter for now.

The reader decides when to open it. Every letter also has a date that you choose, and it cannot be opened before then. Until it is opened, you can unseal and edit it. You can delete it any time, before or after, and download your own copy. Once it is read, the reader can send one tap back: "It helped," "I needed this," "Made me laugh" or "Thank you."

When to open letters like these

The honest answer is when the moment on the label is true. An envelope that says "Open when you miss me" should wait until you do. If you open it early out of curiosity, you will have used it up.

  • Open one letter at a time. A stack read in one night loses its point.
  • Wait for the moment, but not for a perfect version of it. If you are close to the feeling, it is time.
  • Letters tied to a date, like "Open when you turn 18," wait for that day.
  • It is fine to read a letter more than once, on the day and later.

On Open When, each letter also stays locked until the day the writer picked, so it cannot be opened too soon.

How to start your own

Pick one person and one moment you can picture them in. Write for five minutes without stopping, then cut it down. If you want to see finished letters first, the examples page has ten. If you would rather make paper envelopes by hand, the printable guide covers cards, envelopes and an open when book.

QUESTIONS

Questions people ask

What does open when mean in a letter?
It means the letter is meant to be opened at a specific moment, not on a date. The label names it: "Open when you miss me" or "Open when you graduate." The writer picks the moment, and the reader keeps the letter sealed until it arrives. On paper that is a labeled envelope. Online it is a sealed letter the reader opens when they decide the moment has come.
When should I open an open when letter?
Open it when the moment on the label is true for you. If it says "when you miss me," wait until you do. Opening one early to see what is inside spends it. If you cannot tell whether the moment has come, trust your gut: a letter for a sad day is meant for the day you would most want it.
Who gives open when letters?
Partners, friends, parents, siblings and grandparents all write them. People give them when someone is leaving, starting something new or going through a hard season: a move, college, a long trip, a new baby, a wedding, or a stretch of long distance. They also work as a gift when you cannot be there in person.
Is an open when letter the same as a letter to your future self?
Not quite. An open when letter is written to someone else and opens at a moment the reader recognizes. A letter to your future self is locked until a date you pick. Open When has both: Open When letters for other people, and Yourself letters, which stay locked until your date. If you leave an email, we tell you when it unlocks.
Do I need to buy anything to make open when letters?
On paper you need envelopes, something to write on and a pen. Online you need nothing: writing and reading on Open When are free, no account is needed, and an email is optional. You can start with a single letter and add more whenever a new moment comes to mind.
