Digital letters: what they are, and how they differ from email and paper

Digital letters are letters written and delivered online that, unlike an email, can be sealed for a moment or a date and opened later. This page compares digital letters with email and paper honestly, including what paper still does better.

An example to start from

Open when you land

Welcome to the other side of the world. You are probably tired and a little scared, and your phone is at four percent.

Breathe. Find your bag. Text the family so they stop texting me. Then sit down somewhere with a view of nothing in particular and let it be real that you are there.

You were brave to go. I'll call at your breakfast time.

Private by default. Only the person you address can open it.
Delete any time: before it's opened, after, or everything.

What counts as a digital letter

A digital letter lives online instead of on paper, and it is built to be read slowly. It is not a text message or a quick email. It has a reader, an occasion and usually a reason it was held back until now.

The simplest version is an email you write carefully and send. The version on Open When goes a step further: you seal the letter, choose how it travels, and the words stay hidden until the reader opens it.

EXAMPLE LETTERS

Letters to borrow from

We wrote these to show what a letter like this can sound like. Borrow a line, then make it yours: the small, true details are what make it land.

Open on the morning of your wedding

You're up before everyone, aren't you. I know you.

This is from the girl who shared a bunk bed with you. You are going to cry at the wrong moment and laugh at the wrong moment, and it will be perfect. Eat breakfast. Let someone fix your hair.

Everything you did to get here was worth it. I'll be in the front row, being embarrassing.

To me, one year from now

It's June and I'm sitting on the back steps with a glass of lemonade, writing to you. I want to know if you took the job, and if you finally called Dad.

If you did neither, that's okay. Do one of them this week. I'm saying that as the version of you who still has a lot of questions.

Be kind to us.

Whatever the email or the envelope said, it's not the whole story. I got turned down twice before I got the job I actually wanted. I'm glad it worked out that way, even though it didn't feel like it then.

Take a day. Be sad or thrilled or both. Then we'll work out the next step together.

You're the same person you were yesterday, and that person is great.

Happy retirement, Walt

Walt, today you're opening this instead of the parking lot gate. Congratulations.

Thirty-one years of fixing the printer on the third floor, and nobody ever thanked you properly. We are thanking you properly. We'll miss the stories, your coffee (awful) and the way you always knew which pipe was leaking before anyone else.

Go sleep in. Go fishing. Send us pictures of the fish.

Digital letters versus email

Email is for information and replies. A letter is written to be kept. The practical differences:

  • Timing. An email lands the moment you send it. A sealed digital letter waits for the moment or date you chose.
  • Surprise. An email shows its subject and often its first line. On Open When the notification email says a sealed letter is waiting and never contains the words.
  • Control. Once an email is delivered, you cannot take it back. You can unseal and edit an Open When letter any time before it is opened, and delete it any time, even afterward.
  • Feel. An inbox is crowded. A letter has a wax seal color and a handwriting style you choose, and can carry one song.

Email is still the right tool for quick, searchable messages to anyone with an address.

Digital letters versus paper

Paper has real advantages. You can hold it. Handwriting carries the writer in a way a font cannot. A folded page in a drawer needs no battery, no password and no website, and people keep letters for decades because they can find them.

A digital letter does things paper cannot. It can be sealed until an exact day and arrive that morning. It can reach someone on the other side of the world without waiting on the post. You can edit it before it is opened, and delete it if things change. And you can download your own copy of every letter.

The limit of digital is time. Nobody can promise what a website will be doing in decades. If a letter matters for the long run, do both: write it online for the timing, and keep your downloaded copy somewhere you control, or print it.

When a digital letter is the better choice

  • The reader lives far away, and you want the letter to arrive at the right moment instead of whenever the post decides.
  • The letter is for a day itself: a birthday, wedding, new baby, graduation, retirement or sympathy. An Occasions letter stays sealed until that day, and the reader's email arrives that morning.
  • You are writing to future you. A Yourself letter stays locked until the date you pick.
  • You are not sure you will ever send it. An Unsent letter has no send button and stays on your own shelf, where only you can see it.

Pick paper when the handwriting is the point, when the reader does not use email, or when the letter will live in a box in a closet.

How a digital letter travels on Open When

You choose one of three routes. By email: the reader gets a message saying a sealed letter is waiting. By a private link or QR code that you give them yourself, in a card or a message. Or keep it for now, if you are not ready to send.

Writing and reading are free, and no account is needed. An email address is optional. Letters are encrypted when stored, and nobody at Open When reads private letters. Open When never writes your letter for you: prompts help you start, and the words are yours. More on that is in the privacy notes.

IF YOU ARE STUCK

Questions that help you start

  • Who is the one reader you are writing for?
  • When should this reach them, and what will they be doing?
  • What would you say if you had to wait a year to say it?
  • What detail would make this feel like you, not like a template?
  • What do you want to be true for them after they read it?
  • What would you leave out if you knew they would keep it?

Open When never writes your letter for you. These are only here to get the first line down.

QUESTIONS

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a digital letter and an email?
An email is sent and delivered right away, and it shows up in a crowded inbox. A digital letter on Open When is sealed first, waits for a moment or a date, and reaches the reader as a notice that something is waiting. The words stay hidden until they open it. Email is better for quick messages. A letter is for things worth keeping.
Are digital letters private?
On Open When, letters are encrypted when stored, and nobody at Open When reads private letters. The notification email tells the reader a sealed letter is waiting but never contains the words. You also choose how it travels, including a private link or QR code you give them yourself. The public shelf holds only letters the writer asks to share after they have been opened, and a person reads every one before it goes up.
Do digital letters last as long as paper?
Nobody can promise that. Paper can last a long time if it is kept dry and found again, but a digital letter depends on a service staying available. That is why you can download your own copy of every letter on Open When. Keep it somewhere you control, or print it, if the letter matters a great deal.
Is a digital letter better than a handwritten one?
Neither is better, because they do different jobs. Handwriting carries the person, and a page can sit in a drawer for years. A digital letter can be timed, edited before it is opened and delivered anywhere. Many people do both: a paper note for the keepsake and a digital letter for the timing.
How do I write a good digital letter?
Write it the way you would on paper: one reader, one moment and a few specific details. Skip the subject-line voice. Say what you want them to know, then stop. Read it aloud once, and cut anything you would not say to their face. Short is fine, and a letter of a hundred words that sounds like you beats a long one that does not.
