Open when cards and envelopes are easy to make with a pen, paper and an afternoon. This guide covers the envelope set, the card version and the open when book, with printable labels to finish it off. If you would rather write online, that route is here too.

Open when you need a snack

Check the second drawer to the left of the stove. The good crackers are behind the cereal. I hid them from myself, and now I'm hiding them from you, but only until you open this.

If you also need a hug, there is one coming at six.

Open when envelopes: the simplest set

An open when envelope set is a stack of letters, each in its own envelope with a moment written on the front. It is the easiest of the three versions and the one most people picture first.

You need:

  • Envelopes, any size that fits your folded paper
  • Paper or notecards, and a pen you like writing with
  • A marker or pen for the labels
  • Optional: wax and a seal stamp, a ribbon or a small box

Then:

  • Choose your moments. Five to twelve is plenty. The open when ideas list has plenty to pick from.
  • Write each letter on its own sheet, in one sitting, while you can picture the moment.
  • Fold it, slide it into an envelope and write "Open when ..." on the front.
  • Seal it. If you like wax, the wax seal guide is a place to start.
  • Stack the envelopes in a box or tie them with a ribbon, and hand them over.

Letters to borrow from

We wrote these to show what a letter like this can sound like. Borrow a line, then make it yours: the small, true details are what make it land.

Open when it rains

Rain is the best excuse there is. Cancel what you can. Make tea, find the thick socks and read the book you keep saying you'll start.

When I was your age I used to lie on the porch floor and listen to it on the tin roof. Do that if you have a roof that lets you.

Open when you're at the airport

Boarding pass in your hand, a long line, and a feeling in your chest that is half nerves and half excitement. Both are fine.

Buy a terrible magazine. Text me a picture of your gate. Remember that I'm at the other end of this flight with the porch light on.

See you soon.

Open when you reach the last page

You made it to the back of the book. That means you got through the hard days and some of the funny ones, and I hope you opened them slowly.

There's nothing left to open, but the book isn't finished. Turn it around and write one for me. I'll open it on a day I need it.

Open when cards: shorter and quicker

Cards suit short notes: a few lines, a joke, a promise. A stack of blank cards with the moment on the front and the note inside takes less time than full letters, and the set fits in a pocket or a bag.

A card works well for "Open when you need a laugh" or "Open when you're at the airport." For heavier moments like "Open when you're sad," a full page usually says it better. Many sets mix both. For a boyfriend, a few funny cards and a few serious letters feel balanced, and the boyfriend page has ideas.

An open when book

An open when book keeps every moment in one place. Use a small notebook, a photo album with sleeves or a binder with page pockets. Give each moment its own page or pocket, with the moment as the heading in your best handwriting.

The book has a built-in order, so the reader can flip to the moment they need instead of holding a stack. To keep the surprise, write "one at a time" on the cover, or close each page with a small dot of glue stick so it has to be opened on purpose.

The printable labels on this page

The printable labels on this page are a sheet of 12 envelope labels. It prints on plain paper, so you do not need sticker sheets. Print it, cut the labels out and tape or glue one to the front of each envelope, or tuck a label inside a card. If you want a moment that is not on the sheet, write it by hand.

The digital route

If the reader lives far away, or you would rather not shop for supplies, write the letters online. On Open When you choose the moment, write the letter, pick a wax seal color and a handwriting style, and seal it. Writing and reading are free, and no account is needed.

The reader gets an email saying a sealed letter is waiting, or you give them a private link or QR code yourself. Every letter has a date that you choose, and it stays locked until then. You can unseal and edit it until it is opened. Some people do both: a hand-labeled envelope, with the link to a digital letter inside. The digital letters page compares the two routes.

Questions that help you start

  • Which five moments would you most want letters for if you were the reader?
  • What would the front of the envelope say in your handwriting?
  • What small thing could go inside with the letter?
  • Which moments need a full page, and which only need a line?
  • What is the last page of the book going to say?
  • Where will they keep the stack?

Open When never writes your letter for you. These are only here to get the first line down.

QUESTIONS

Questions people ask

What do you put in open when envelopes?
A letter or card written for the moment on the front. Some people add a small extra: a ticket stub, a tea bag for "Open when you're sick," a coin for "Open when you need luck." Keep extras flat so the envelope still closes and stacks well. The writing matters most, so spend your time on that.
How many open when envelopes should I make?
Five to twelve is a comfortable range. Fewer than five can feel thin as a gift, and more than twelve gets hard to write well. The printable sheet on this page has 12 labels, which fits neatly in a shoebox. You can always add another envelope later when a new moment comes to mind.
How do I make an open when book?
Pick a small notebook, a binder with page pockets or a photo album with sleeves. Write each moment as a heading on its own page, then put the letter or card in the pocket behind it. Add a note on the cover about opening one at a time. Leave a few blank pages at the back so the reader can write one back.
What are good open when cards for a boyfriend?
Keep them short and specific: "Open when you miss me," "Open when you need a laugh," "Open when we're apart." One line of kindness, one inside joke and one thing to look forward to is enough for a card. Save longer writing for heavier moments. The boyfriend page lists more moments and has full example letters.
Can I make open when letters online instead?
Yes. On Open When you write the letter, choose the moment, pick a seal color and handwriting style, and send it by email, private link or QR code. It is free, with no account needed. Paper is nicer to hold, while online can be timed and reaches people who are far away.
