Breaking up on text: when it is fine, and what to say

Breaking up on text is sometimes the kind choice and sometimes the cowardly one. Below: how to tell which, how to do it with respect, example breakup texts, and a different kind of breakup letter, the one you write for yourself and never send.

What one can sound like

To Mark, three months after the apartment

Mark,

The sofa is gone, the key is back in your hand, and it's been three months. I wanted to tell you I'm not angry anymore, which surprises me.

I'm still sad about the Sundays. That's all. I'm not going to send this. I'm glad to have it written down.

When breaking up on text is okay

There is no rule that a breakup must happen face to face. There are situations where a text is the right call, and a few where it is the only safe one.

  • You have only been dating a short while. After a few dates, a clear, kind text is more respectful than a long meeting neither of you wanted.
  • You feel unsafe. If someone has been controlling, threatening or frightening, you do not owe them a conversation. A text, or no explanation at all, is a fair way out. Tell someone you trust first.
  • You have already said it in person. If the talk happened and the other person will not accept it, a short text can make it final.
  • You have never met in person. A call is better, but a text is not a crime.

In each of these, the text should still be clear. A text can be brief and still treat the other person as someone who matters.

We wrote these to show what a letter like this can sound like. Borrow a line, then make it yours: the small, true details are what make it land.

To Sam, a breakup letter I did send

Sam,

After eight years I owe you more than a text, and you'll get a call too. I'm writing because I want you to have the words in your hand.

I'm ending our relationship. I stopped being in love with you about a year ago and I kept waiting for it to come back. It didn't, and you deserve someone who is glad to see you at the door.

Thank you for the road trip to Santa Fe, and for being there when my dad died. I won't forget either. I'm sorry.

To the guy who ended it by text

You ended eleven months with a thumbs-up emoji and "it's not working." I read it in the line at the pharmacy.

I'd like to say I'm over it, but that was a rude way to end anything. After eleven months I got the reply you'd give a delivery driver.

I'm not sending this. I'm going to buy a bright red coat instead.

To Nadia, after I ended it

Nadia,

I ended it and I'm the one crying, and I know that isn't fair. You were right to be angry on the phone.

I'm not writing to reopen anything. You were kind to my mother, you remembered I hate cilantro, and you never asked me to be someone else. I didn't leave because of anything you did.

I hope the new job is good.

To who I was with Colin

Hey you,

You laughed at jokes you didn't find funny and stopped calling your sisters on Sundays because he thought it was a lot. You thought that was what a good girlfriend looked like.

I'm sorry it took so long. I'm glad you finally left. I'm going to call Ruth tonight.

To Mika, after the last box

Mika,

The last box went into the car this morning. You waved from the porch and I didn't know whether to wave back.

I hope you're okay. I hope the cat's okay. I hope this was the right thing. I don't know yet.

SHORT MESSAGES

Short messages you can use

  1. I've enjoyed getting to know you, and I'm not feeling the connection I'd want if we kept going. I wanted to tell you plainly instead of fading out. I'm sorry, and I wish you well.
  2. I need to be honest: I don't see this going further for me. Thank you for the dinners and the laughs. I hope you find someone who is excited to see you.
  3. I like you as a person, and I don't feel romantic about us. I'd rather say that now than let you keep hoping. Take care of yourself.
  4. I'm ending things. I know a text isn't how you'd choose to hear it, and I'm sorry. It felt more honest than going quiet.
  5. I'm calling you tonight at seven because I owe you more than a text. I'm telling you now so it isn't a surprise: I think we should end this.
  6. I've decided to end this, and I don't want to argue about it by text. I'll leave your things with your sister on Saturday.
  7. I can't keep doing the on-again, off-again. This time I mean it, and I need you to take me at my word.
  8. I'd like to tell you this in person, and I can't make that work. So I'm saying it here: I'm ending our relationship, and I'm sorry.
  9. I've tried to make the distance work and it's costing us both. I think we should stop here. I'll always be glad we met.
  10. I want different things than you do, and I don't think either of us is wrong. I'm sorry I took this long to say it.
  11. I'm moving next month and I don't want to start there half in a relationship. I'm sorry it comes by text. I'd rather you hear it from me than guess.
  12. You deserve someone who is sure. I'm not, and I won't pretend. I'm sorry.
  13. After a lot of thought, I have decided to end our relationship. I wish you every happiness.
  14. I don't think we're right for each other. I'm sorry.
  15. You make excellent pancakes and I'm not in love with you. That's the whole text, and I'm sorry it isn't longer.
  16. Thank you for the good parts, and there were a lot of them. I'm still ending this.
  17. I'd like us to stay kind to each other. I can't be your partner anymore, and I hope one day we can say hello without it hurting.
  18. I understand you're angry. I'm not going to change my mind, and I'm going to stop replying now so we can both calm down.
  19. I know you'll want to talk. I can't right now. When some time has passed I'm happy to answer whatever you need to know.
  20. I've been going back and forth for weeks and I don't want to keep you waiting for an answer. It's a no, and it's been a no for a while.
  21. I'm ending this because I haven't felt treated the way I want to be, and I've said so more than once. I'm not asking for another chance for either of us.
  22. I'm choosing text because I don't feel safe talking in person. This is over. Please don't contact me.
  23. I'm sorry for how I handled this. You deserved a conversation, and you'll have one if you want it. I'm still ending the relationship.
  24. Okay. I'm hurt, and I need some space. I'll message you about the apartment next week.

When a text is not okay

A text is the wrong tool when the relationship has weight. If you have lived together, been together for months or years, met each other's families, or shared a pet, a lease or a plan, the other person deserves to hear it from you, on a call or in person.

Two things are worse than a breakup text. One is going quiet and hoping they get the message. The other is sending "we need to talk" and then not answering the phone.

If you cannot face a conversation, you can still use a text for the first step: say you have something hard to say, and ask for a call at a set time. Then make the call. A text that ends a long relationship, with nothing before or after it, tells the person it did not matter. Even if that is not what you mean, it is what it says.

How to break up with someone over text

If a text is the right choice, do it well.

  • Decide first. Do not send a breakup text to see how they react. If you might change your mind, you are not ready.
  • Say it in the first two lines. Do not make them read a paragraph of warm-up to find out.
  • Say "I", not a list of their faults. "I don't feel what I should" is honest. A catalog of everything wrong with them starts a fight.
  • Do not give false hope. No "maybe later" or "I just need time" unless you mean it.
  • Pick a decent time. Not during their work shift, not the night before an exam or a funeral, not at 2 a.m.
  • Keep it short and kind. One small thank you is enough. A long text reads like an essay to be argued with.
  • Handle the practical bit in one line. Say when you will return their things.
  • Answer once if they reply. Then stop. You can be firm and kind: "I understand you're hurt. I'm not changing my mind."

Breakup text examples

Texting a breakup is easier when you can see the shape of one. These are shapes, not scripts. Change the details until they sound like you, and cut anything you would not say out loud.

The first few suit early dating. The middle ones suit longer relationships, where the text should come with or after a call. The last ones are for replies, and for when you do not feel safe. A good breakup text names the end plainly, takes responsibility for your own decision, and does not argue. It does not need to be clever.

Breakup letters, and the unsent kind

A break up letter is a longer way of saying it, and it can be a better one than a text. It suits a long relationship when you cannot find the words out loud, or when a calm written version is easier to take in. Keep it to a page. Say what is ending, one true thing you are grateful for, and what happens next with the practical things. Do not use it to win the argument.

There is another kind: the breakup letter you write and never send. This is the one where you say all of it. The unfair part, the thing they did on the stairs, the feeling that the last month was a lie, what you miss. You can write it to the person who left, the person you left, or who you were in that relationship. Writing can help a little. It will not take the ending back.

An unsent letter has no send button and no address. You can fold it and keep it on your own shelf on your device, where only you can see it, or let it go and it is deleted for good. See letters to an ex for examples, and the Unsent hub for how it works.

  • What are you still angry about, and what would you say if the anger were allowed?
  • What did you learn about yourself in this relationship?

QUESTIONS

Questions people ask

Is it rude to break up with someone over text?
It depends on how long you have been together. After a few dates, a clear and kind text is usually fine. After months or years of a real relationship, a text on its own can feel dismissive, and a call or conversation is fairer. If you feel unsafe, a text is a reasonable choice at any point. What matters most is that the message is clear and kind.
What should I say when breaking up on text?
Say it in the first two lines, say it as your decision, and keep it short. For example: "I'm ending things. I don't feel what I should, and I don't want to keep you waiting. Thank you for the good parts." Do not blame, do not make promises you do not mean, and do not leave the door ajar unless you want it open.
Should I reply if they answer angrily?
You do not owe a long exchange. It is fair to answer once, calmly: that you understand they are hurt and your decision has not changed. After that, you can stop replying. If the messages become threatening or you feel unsafe, do not respond, and tell someone you trust.
What is a breakup letter?
A breakup letter is a written ending, usually longer and calmer than a text. It can be sent, as a letter or an email, or never sent at all. The unsent kind is for you: you say everything you cannot say to them, then keep it or let it go. Some people also write a second, shorter and kinder version to send.
Can I write a breakup letter I never send here?
Yes. Write it in the Unsent department. There is no send button and no address, so it can go nowhere by accident. You can fold it and keep it on your own shelf on your device, where only you can see it, or let it go and it is deleted for good. It is free to write, and no account is needed.
